Inspired by a Rembrandt drawing of figures peeking around a corner, Santore reimagines the motif in a contemporary studio setting. Drawn entirely from life, the work captures three figures absorbed in the act of looking. There is a quiet tension in the scene, as the figures observe something just out of the frame. Despite the everyday setting, the arrangement recalls theatrical staging, heightening the sense of anticipation. The artist displays his mastery over charcoal, turning a fleeting moment of curiosity into a meditation on observation itself.

In Rosie in Jeans, there is a sense of another world left suspended in time. A seated figure is surrounded by densely packed objects and detritus, symbolizing consumption and abundance. Her gaze is elsewhere, looking beyond the frame in a state of existential contemplation. A pair of hands with a saw enter the left side of the composition, a distributive element that adds tension and humor. The picture is realistic yet fantastical, with inconsistencies that place the scene somewhere in between the physical and metaphysical realms.

Joseph Santore reimagines the Annunciation, one of the most enduring themes in Renaissance art. The janitor from Santore's studio building poses as the archangel Gabriel, while models embody the two Mary figures. In Santore's version, Mary is the protagonist of her own story. “She presses her body against the column to experience a physical sensation, assuring her that she is young and alive in this world,” the artist explains. “The angel can come or go, raise his hand or broom at will, but that doesn’t mean she has to be happy with the way God is entering her.” Through this contemporary recasting, Santore explores the conflicts we all face; do we accept what’s offered to us, do we reject it, or do we really have a choice?
