First Steps

Joseph Santore

First Steps

2021

Willow charcoal on paper

32 x 26 in (81 x 66 cm)

$15,000

First Steps is inspired by a scene from The Frankenstein Chronicles, with Santore replacing Dr. Frankenstein with a female figure. Rendered nude alongside her male counterpart, the pair subtly reference Genesis stories, suggesting that Adam and Eve were created at the same moment. Santore, a lifelong reader of mythology, has long been fascinated by creation narratives, and here the studio becomes a stage for origins and awakenings. Surrounded by traces of ordinary life—potted plants, scattered shoes, a chair piled with objects—the figures appear otherworldly, newly awakened, and tentative in their first steps.
