The Cabrakan Table is named after the Mayan god Cabrakan, who is known for his strength and ability to move mountains, a nod to the power and beauty of the earth’s natural forces. Its base is made from volcanic stone named Cantera: a material used across Mexico for centuries, from the most mundane to the most sacred. The table is hand carved using both traditional Pre-Columbian stone masonry techniques as well as modern machinery. Its carved details are inspired by the ornamentation found on ancient temples, the dotted glyphs in Mayan codices that shift the meaning of words, and the rivets on subway columns in New York. These layered references connect different places and times—combining the sacred, the industrial, and the everyday.
